Mt Beauty was established in 1949 during construction of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme, the country's second largest; the township developed by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria to provide additional accommodation for the thousands of workers during construction.

Valley View Lodge in the upper Kiewa Valley, overlooks Mount Bogong - Victoria's highest peak. Located on an acre of landscaped grounds with large outdoor viewing deck and inviting pool for a relaxing swim, this family owned and operated business offers warm friendly service. Spacious guest rooms with ensuite (all with double and single bed) offer tea and coffee making facilities, table & chairs, TV, ceiling fans, air-conditioning and central heating.

 

There’s a large lounge & dining area with a licenced bar and open fire for guests to relax with newly-made friends and enjoy panoramic views of the valley and mountains over a cup of tea, coffee or social drink. Tours are operated in a Mercedes-Benz Optimo, fitted with seat belts, making for a pleasant and safe travelling experience. Courtesy Albury Railway Station transfers are available, or free parking is provided for those who self-drive.

WINTER ITINERARY - 1 APRIL TO 15 OCTOBER
Day 1 Sunday: To The Valley View Lodge Via Albury and the Picturesque Kiewa Valley

After you arrive at Albury Station or Airport, our coach driver and tour guide will be there to meet you. The tour group will then enjoy a scenic transfer in our complementary airconditioned Mercedes Benz coach along the beautiful Kiewa Valley to Valley View Lodge – your home away from home for the next 5 nights. There you can enjoy afternoon tea or a refreshing drink in our spacious and comfortable lounge overlooking the Victorian Alps (still snow capped in early spring). Time to relax and meet with the other guests before your first dinner with us.


Day2 Monday: Yackandandah/Old Schoolhouse Gallery/Historic Beechworth & Murray Breweries
Today it’s off to the early gold town of Yackandandah with its majestic trees and historic buildings, with time to view this historic town. Then it’s off to Beechworth, Victoria’s best preserved historic gold town where we enjoy morning tea at the Old Schoolhouse Gallery and have an opportunity to purchase local works and proucts. We visit Murray Breweries incorporating the National Trust’s Beechworth Carriage Museum on the tour, along with an informative sightseeing tour around Beechworth exploring it’s rich heritage. Our lunch today is at one of Beechworth’s oldest hotels, a favourite haunt of Ned Kelly’s. After lunch free time in Beechworth to explore the various historic buildings, galleries and shops, leave a little room after lunch to sample something from the famous Beechworth Bakery.
We then return home for afternoon tea and maybe a stroll before dinner.


Day 3 Tuesday: Bright/Red Stag Deer & Emu Farm/ Tawonga Gap & Sullivan’s Lookout
Today we travel over the Tawonga Gap and stop to stretch our legs and take in the beautiful views. Then to Bright for morning tea, after this comfort stop an informative tour of this popular tourist town takes place. When in season and time permitting we also visit a Fruit Orchard, The Walnut & Chestnut Centre and other seasonal attractions.Next on the tour is our visit to the Red Stag Deer and Emu Farm, during lunch at the Red Stag Restaurant the owner Grace will give an informative talk on her farm. After lunch, we return to Bright with free time to explore one of the prettiest towns in Australia. On our return home we stop at Sullivan’s Lookout with it’s breathtaking views and an opportunity to take photos of this spectacular area.


Day 4 Wednesday: The Army Museum / Bonegilla/ Lake Hume/ Trout Farm and Fishing
Today we travel along the Kiewa Valley and enjoy morning tea in the well kept grounds of the Bandianna Army Base. We then visit to the Australian Army Museum at Bandianna, with its impressive collection of army memorobalia is sure to give us an insight into the Australian Army. We then drive through the historic Bonegilla Migrant Centre on our way to Lake Hume where we have an opportunity to enjoy a great view of the Lake and Dam Wall before visiting the Lake Hume Trout Farm. Here you will enjoy lunch in beautiful garden surrounds whilst having an informative talk about the Farm, Hatchery and Breeding Ponds as well as the other diversifying farming activities that take place here. You will then have the opportunity to catch your own fish which we will prepare for the following nights dinner. Then it’shome to Valley View Lodge for afternoon tea.


Day 5 Thursday: The High Country/Falls Creek Ski Resort/Cattleman’s Hut/ Bogong Village/Mt Beauty/Alpine Discovery Centre
Today we journey into the mountainous Alpine National Park a truly amazing spectacle. We visit the Falls Creek Ski Resort for a tour and talk on this popular winter retreat. Then a scenic walk to Historic Wallace’s Hut, built by pioneering cattlemen over 100 years ago (weather permitting). Onwards to Bogong Alpine Village where today’s lunch will be a surprise!! After this enjoyable lunch break we make our way back to the valley to enjoy some free time in the pretty Alpine Village of Mount Beauty. A visit and tour to the Alpine Discovery Centre follows before proceeding onwards to Valley View Lodge for afternoon tea . For tonights dinner you will be able to enjoy your very own “catch of the day” whilst reminiscing in the company of newly made friends of the good times we have all shared together this week.


Day 6 Friday: Farewell and Homewood Bound
After a farewell breakfast, we transfer by our coach back to Albury in time to meet everyones Rail or Air connections home. A time to reflect on the good times had on tour and the new friendships made.

SUMMER ITINERARY - 17 OCTOBER TO 31 MARCH

Day 1 Sunday: To The Valley View Lodge Via Albury and the Picturesque Kiewa Valley

Day 2 Monday: Harrietville/Lake Tronoh/Lavender Hue/Lookouts and more!
This morning after breakfast we head off to explore the town of Harrietville formerly a gold mining town located at the base of Mt Feathertop and the site of Lake Tronoh - one of the last open gold dredges. We break for morning tea by the Ovens River before visiting the Harrietville Historical Museum revealing the areas fascinating history. Wander through one of the towns few surviving original miners cottages as part of the display capturing a glimpse of life in Harrietville in a time long ago. After exploring the museum we visit the Lake Tronoh dredge hole before moving on to visit a truly beautiful Lavender farm. There we will enjoy lunch and receive a wonderful talk about the farm and the healing and other properties of lavender - with the opportunity to purchase as well. Departing the Lavender farm we meander back along the valley floor passing the small community of Smoko and through the picturesque valley surrounded by berry farms, nut plantations, forests and mountains. You will have marvelous photo opportunities at Tawonga Gap and Sullians Lookout along the way and arrive back at the lodge for afternoon tea and perhaps a stroll before dinner.


Day 3 Tuesday: Beyond the Alps/Pioneers/Historic Museum/Farm Fleeces
Today we travel to Jindera to visit the Jindera Pioneer Museum complex which provides us with a true record of how the pioneers lived in the area after Hume and Hovell blazed a trail from Sydney to Port Phillip in 1824 – a time when movement was restricted to either horse drawn vehicles or walking. There is a general store restored as it would have been in the 1800’s, a restored house and a slab hut and wattle & daub cottage both furnished as in the 1870’s. There are two large galleries and a genuine 1870’s blacksmith shop as well as early farming machinery and many other items of historical interest. We head off from Jindera for Inverness Park Cashmere farm at Table Top where you will be treated to lunch and an informative talk about the farm, the animals and the process from raw fibre to finished product and an opportunity to purchase cashmere garments and products at “on farm prices”. Then it’s time to return home again to Valley View enjoying the sights along the way.


Day 4 Wednesday: Millawa Gormet Region Via Happy Valley/Millawa Mustards/ Millawa Cheese Factory/Beechworth
This morning we embark on our tour to the Milawa gourmet region. First we travel to Myrtleford via the beautiful Happy Valley Route which offers great views of the northern slopes of Mt Bufflao renowned for its steep cliff faces descending into the Ovens and Buckland Valleys. Beyond Myrtleford we head onwards to the renowned Milawa gourmet region for a visit and tasting the condiment centre “Milawa Mustards” located in the historic Old Emu Inn. The famous Milawa Cheese Factory then awaits where you will enjoy lunch. Then after a delicious lunch we travel to Beechworth and enjoy some free time exploring this most famous historic town. Don’t forget to save some room after lunch to sample something from the famous Beechworth bakery. After departing Beechworth we return once again to the Valley View travelling through Yackandandah and the Upper Kiewa Valley.


Day 5 Thursday: Bright and Beyond/Buckland Valley Alpaca Farm
Today our tour takes you beyond Bright and into the scenic Buckland Valley right at the foot of majestic Mt Buffalo to visit the Buckland Valley Alpaca farm where you can see, hear & feel these inquisitive and friendly creatures. You will enjoy the dramatic views of the Mt Buffalo Gorge and have an opportunity to see and purchase fine alpaca garments and products at the “Alpaca passion” shop. After enjoying our visit to the Alpacas we then head to one of our famous local wineries to enjoy lunch and discover about this flourishing local industry. Once again you will be afforded dramatic views of the Ovens Valley and surrounding mountains. Our return trip takes us back via beautiful Bright where you will have some free time to explore this quaint town before we return to the Lodge in time for Afternoon tea or perhaps a relaxing drink with newly made friends in the lounge whilst enjoying the stunning views.


Day 6 Friday: Farewell & Homeward Bound
After a farewell breakfast, we transfer by our coach back to Albury in time to meet everyones Rail or Air connections home. A time to reflect on the good times had on tour and the new friendships made.

How to get to Mount Beauty in North East Victoria

Most guests on this package catch the train to Albury from Sydney or Melbourne. For those coming from further afield but not self-driving. A lot of guests use their annual free rail pass to get to Albury from either Melbourne or Sydney and then take advantage of the free return transfers from Albury to Valley View Lodge. If you are coming from further afield, why not spend a night in Sydney or Melbourne before boarding the train to Albury? The train from Sydney departs around 7.45am, while the train from Melbourne departs at 9.15am.
