South Molle Island in the Whitsundays
South Molle Island is an accessible island in the Whitsunday group between the Great Barrier Reef and the Queensland coast. It is the largest of the North, Mid and South Molle Island Group and the only one with a resort. There are also camping grounds in the south of the island at Sandy Bay, and at Paddle Bay near the resort.
South Molle is around 420 hectares in size and is a hilly island with undulating grasslands that was primarily used for sheep and cattle grazing until the 1950s. There are also secluded bays, fringing reefs and lush pockets of rainforest. The Molle Islands are all drowned mountain and are virtually joined along a causeway so you can walk across to Mid Molle when the tide is low. Nearby Goat Island is also accessible at low tide.
The island is about 20 minutes from Shute Harbour, and 30 minutes from Hamilton Island by launch. It has a number of prominent hills including Mount Jeffreys (194 metres), The Horn (176 metres), Spion Kop (154 metres), and Lamond Hill (133 metres) which all offer excellent views across the ocean.
The island has plenty of birdlife including colourful lorikeets, currawongs and the endangered stone curlews. There is also a seasonal colony of black flying-foxes living on South Molle Island.
Most of the island (about 405 hectares) is a National Park and is great for bushwalking. There are over 16 kilometres of graded well-maintained walking trails which all start from the resort area. There are walks to Oyster Bay which is a rocky mangrove-lined beach (2.5 km from the resort), Mt Jeffreys, the highest point on the island with 360° views (3.5 km from the resort), Spion Kop (3 km from the resort), Lamond Hill (3 km from the resort), Pine Bay, Sandy Bay where coastal sheoaks border the beach (4.7 km from the resort), the Hidden Valley and Balancing Rock (1 km from the resort).
Besides bushwalking the main activities o the island are swimming, snorkelling, cycling, golf (9 holes), tennis, squash and lazing on the beaches. For the more adventurous there is paraflying, dinghy hire, scuba diving, waterskiing, jet skis and daily trips to the Outer Reef platform. South Molle is an affordable island to visit that is suitable for families or couples.
